TILE & STONE CARE

You’ve invested in the beauty & comfort of your home. Protect that investment & extend your new flooring life by taking the time to care for it properly. Here are a few maintenance tips from our side.

ENTRYWAYS
Invest in some good quality protective mats or rugs at your entryways. They will help protect your tile from premature wear & trap dirt & other substances tracked onto your floor.

SEAL YOUR TILE
To keep the tile look brand new, do not forget to apply a good quality sealer. Sealers are easy to apply & relatively affordable.

  • First, follow your manufacturer’s recommendations for cure time after your tile is installed.
  • Next, give your tile a thorough cleaning. This may incorporate removing stains from your grout.
  • Apply the sealer to the floor surface evenly, mop backward towards the room’s opening & allow the sealer to dry.

These protection tips, along with regular sweeping & mopping, will sustain your tile’s beauty & add lasting brilliance to your home décor.

GROUT CLEANING

Cleaner
Start off with a gentle (least acidic) household tile and grout cleaner first. If this doesn't do the job, move up to a harsher chemical cleaner. Try to avoid using bleach since it can alter the color of your grout and cause damage with repeated use..
Scrub
Spray cleaner onto a small length of grout and scrub with a stiff brush.
Circular
Scrub in a circular motion rather than straight up and down. This will remove more debris.
Rinse
Rinse well with warm water and mop up and remaining moisture.

Nylon & Polypropylene (Olefin)

Nylon
Nylon carpet fiber is soft yet strong, shows color brilliantly, and is easy to clean. It is very resilient, fade resistant, and retains its texture well. Newer Nylons called “Nylon 6” or “Nylon 6/6” are more expensive but are engineered to be more durable and resistant to wear. These carpets are great choice for anywhere in the home, especially places where stains may occur.
Polypropylene (Olefin)
The use of polypropylene in carpet has grown dramatically over the past ten years. It is extremely resistant to moisture, stains, fading, and chemical cleaning agents. Polypropylene, a value-oriented fiber, is notably colorfast because it is solution dyed, which means the color is added during the fiber production and not dyed later. Because it’s so resistant to moisture and mildew, it’s generally a good choice for both outdoor and indoor areas including playrooms, kitchens and dens.

Polyester (P.E.T.) & Wool

Polyester (P.E.T.)
Made from recycled P.E.T. products, like plastic soda bottles, it is stronger than polypropylene and can perform as well as nylon at a lower cost. It offers exceptional softness, making it ideal for thick, cut pile styles. Polyester is also naturally and permanently stain and fade resistant. It has excellent color clarity, color retention, strength, and abrasion resistance. Carpets made from polyester are easily cleaned and they resist water soluble stains. As a recycled product, it is an inexpensive environmentally friendly option.
Wool
Wool is the crème dela crème of carpet fiber. It was the original fiber for carpet and is the only natural one of the four main fibers. It is tough and durable yet soft and luxurious. Dust, dirt, and oil-based stains come out easily because wool naturally releases the soil rather than absorbing it. In a high traffic room, it stays resilient and bounces back. It’s also environmentally friendly because it comes from a renewable resource. Wool is the most expensive carpet fiber and is generally used only in luxury carpets and area rugs.
When you purchase a carpet made with any of these fibers, you’ll get a comprehensive warranty from the manufacturer. Ask your Abbey expert for more information about the performance and warranties on these products.

Advanced Generation Nylons (Branded Fiber)

Advanced Generation Nylons are also called “branded fibers” because they have a specific brand name. Buying branded versus unbranded carpet makes a huge difference. Branded fibers are manufactured to a strict set of standards and offer better performance, stain, static, and crush resistance. The fibers have been specially treated with stain and soil resistant resins that were applied during the dyeing process. We feature the following branded fibers:

• Premier Stainmaster®
• Softique®
• Infinity Nylon Carpet Fiber®

You’ll find carpet made with these branded fibers on our Alexander Smith and American Showcase displays in your Abbey showroom. These branded fibers receive our Exclusive Lifetime Warranties.

IN A NUTSHELLOur services

Make arrangements prior to the arrival of the installation crew for removal of old flooring.

SELECTING TILE & STONE

Not only is tile gorgeous but it’s also very practical. Tile is basically an inert surface of fired (baked) clay, metal or stone. It’s easy to keep clean and tends to retard the growth of fungus, mold, and mildew. Your options are virtually endless with all the colors, textures, shapes, and sizes available today.

LOCATION

Not all tiles are rated for everyday use. Our expert can help guide you in your choice. Most manufacturers identify a tile's durability. The higher the number, the higher the wear rating.

BUDGET

Natural stone & glass tiles tend to be more expensive than their ceramic & porcelain counterparts. Manufacturers like Cambria & MSI Surfaces now create tiles that mimic natural stone's look in the more resilient & cost-effective ceramic & porcelain alternatives

RESILIENCE

When properly installed, the tiles from Vico Stone are extremely durable. Granite is virtually indestructible & can go anywhere. Marble may scratch easier but can be prevented by regular flooring treatments. Treated glass tile & ceramic are very resilient but may chip or break if heavy sharp objects are dropped.

DESIGN AESTHETICS

Natural Stone such as granite & marble tends to exude luxury & formality.

FEEL & LIFESTYLE

Glass has a spa-like feel, while ceramic & porcelain can be more casual. The gloss of ceramic can also impact feel.

UNIFORMITY

Tiles are rated on color & texture consistency. Sile Stone experts will help you pick more uniform tiles or tiles with extreme variation, depending on your design preference.

MAINTENANCE

Some tile requires more care & treatment before & after installation than others.

ROOM SIZE

Often people think small rooms require small tiles, but that isn't always the case. Large tile in a small room makes it feel more spacious. Smaller tiles with more grout lines make the room look busier. Scale plays an essential part in creating a balanced look.

IN A NUTSHELLOur services

Credibly reintermediate backend ideas for cross-platform models. Continually reintermediate integrated processes through technically sound intellectual capital. Holistically foster superior methodologies without market-driven best practices.

What color? Do you want a pattern or bold graphics? What finish? Is a beveled or straight edge best? Will it be a focal point or a backdrop? There are endless possibilities for Tile in your home. Our expert will work with you to select the perfect look for you & your lifestyle.HOW DO YOU CHOOSE?

CERAMIC

Ceramic Tiles come from clay that is fired in a kiln. Left as is, it is called un-glazed & is limited to the natural colors of the clay. The Tile can be glazed & fired a second time to create a matte, semi-gloss, or high gloss finish with a broad range of color options. Glazed Tile has better stain & moisture resistance than unglazed Tile. Be aware that high gloss tiles are more slippery & prone to showing scratches than textured or matte finishes. Un-glazed Ceramics are highly slipped resistant but must be sealed to reduce staining.

PORCELAIN

Porcelain is a class of ceramic, but it is composed of a sand-like material & fired at higher temperatures. Throughout the Tile, the coloring is seen & creates a durable, non-porous, scratch-resistant product that can withstand extreme temperatures. This makes them an excellent choice for indoors & outdoors. The terms porcelain & ceramic are oftentimes used interchangeably.

GRANITE

Granite is the most rigid stone floor available. Being formed from magma, it is nearly as hard & durable as a diamond. Choose from thousands of colors in a multitude of shades. Due to its moisture & scratch resistance, it is an excellent choice for kitchens but can be used on any floor, walls & counters.

MARBLE

The marble flooring is classic & elegant. It is generally created inside the earth when the heat & high-pressure form limestone. Marble adds sophistication to any space, but because it is more porous than granite, it is more susceptible to scratching & moisture. A below surface sealant & surface finishing treatments are essential steps to minimize scratching & prevent potential moisture damage. To keep it looking lavish, regular care & maintenance is required.

GLASS

The way glass tiles shimmer & change in the light gives off a sleek & radiant finish to the room. They are often used in bathrooms, kitchens, & pools, but not limited to those areas. Loved by designers, glass feels ultra-modern & high end. Glass tiles resist moisture, stain, chemicals, mold & mildew. It is non-porous & will not fade. Unique glass flooring tiles are made firm, slip-resistant, & withstand wear. They come in different sizes ranging from 1” to 18” 7 an unending variety of shapes, colors & finishes.

MOSAICS

Mosaics are tiles sized 2x2 or smaller & can be used as borders, countertops, walls, & even flooring. They come in many shapes, including squares, circles, ovals, teardrops, & an endless array of patterns & colors. Mosaic Tile can include stone, metal, glass, ceramic, porcelain, & any of these. Decorative mosaics typically have a higher gloss. Mosaic Tile is the cherry on your sundae, the finishing touch of your flooring or design project.

While your new carpet is of the highest quality, it is still subject to everyday wear. Everyday Wear & Tear

Sprouting
If loose ends or "sprouts" extend above the rest of the pile, trim them off evenly with the pile surface. Never try to pull them out. After clipping, smooth the area with your fingers. Sharp edges on your vacuum cleaner, a child's toy, high heels or animal claws can cause this condition.
Pile Crushing
All carpet fibers will crush under heavy, stationary loads. Crushing can be reduced by shifting furniture regularly. Crushed areas can usually be restored by covering the area with a damp, clean white cloth and then very carefully applying heat to the cloth with an electric iron on a low setting. Remove the cloth and restore the pile while it is still hot by brushing it lightly. Keep traffic off the carpet until it is dry.
Shading
After certain carpet styles have been subjected to traffic, you may notice areas that appear lighter or darker than other areas. Don't be alarmed! Shading is the result of the change in direction of the pile due to pressure from the footsteps and vacuuming. Brushing the pile all in one direction may temporarily correct shading; however, shading is part of the carpet styling and should be expected to varying degrees. Do not mistake shading for color fading.
Pile Distortion/Roll Crush
When carpet is manufactured, inspected, handled and shipped, it is rolled and unrolled many times. A common problem called pile distortion or roll crush can occur when this happens. It can be corrected only after the carpet is installed.
