There are 4 main methods associated with completing a hardwood floor installation:

FOUR TYPES OF HARDWOOD FLOORING

NAIL DOWN
With this method, wood strips are installed using a nailer & a mallet.

GLUE DOWN
Glue is used for parquets & engineered flooring. An adhesive is applied to very precisely fix the hardwood floors onto the subfloor. Our professional installer will apply the proper glue for your preferred floors, ensuring your hardwood floor installation does not cause unnecessary damage.

STAPLE DOWN
A specific staple gun will be used to attach the wood floor to the subfloor using 1-1/2 to 2-inch staples. There are different pneumatic guns for other floors, so it’s essential to hire a professional hardwood floor installer to use equipment accordingly.

FLOATING
Utilizing this approach, the hardwood floor is not attached to any portion of the subfloor. A pad is placed between the subfloor & wood floor & glue is applied to hold each piece together.

SPECIES
There are many species of hardwood. Each has its benefit depending on desired look, color, and durability. Not all species are equally hard. If your floor is in a high traffic area or a heavily used room then you should consider oak, maple, or ash.
TRADITIONAL OAK
Traditional oak has more variations in grain and shade while maple is cleaner and more understated. There are exotic species such as Tigerwood, Brazilian cherry, and Santos Mahogany with a unique combination of origin, color, and surface characteristics. Ask our experts to show you species that are appropriate for your lifestyle.
COLOR
Hardwood colorS run from almost white to black, with browns, tan, reds, and grays in between. A medium color is cozy and rich. Dark colors are modern, chic, and expensive looking. Lighter colors create a spacious interior and a neutral design point. Species impacts color as some are naturally dark, such as cherry and walnut, or a light, less expensive flooring can be stained for any desired look. Keep in mind that it is better to create contrast between your flooring, walls, and furniture.
WIDTH
Width Hardwood flooring is generally described by board width. A strip is less than 3” wide. Planks are 3” or wider. The width of individual boards has a dramatic influence on the look of your floor. Strips make a room look bigger. Planks are have a more rustic feel. Keep in mind that wide widths will complement a large room but could overwhelm a small area.

CARING FOR HARDWOOD FLOORS

Once your brand new floor is fixed, you’ll surely want to keep it looking like new. You can prevent scratches caused by dust, dirt & other particles using mats or rugs, especially in high traffic areas like entrances.

Buy a good quality broom & sweep your new floor at least once a week. Reduce dust – a significant source of scratching – by using a dry microfiber mop in between sweeping.

Regal Hardwood is the finest supplier of flooring with the lowest formaldehyde emissions, whether wood or vinyl. All our wood is legally harvested from managed forests where wood is replanted.

A vacuum cleaner without a beater bar can be helpful in between planks & other hard to reach areas. Take your shoes off. Don’t drag furniture. Protect your floors by putting felt on the bottom of furniture, especially on things that get moved more often, such as tables & chairs. Don’t forget to replace these felt stickers occasionally since they wear down & may have dirt trapped in them.

  1. Use Furniture Pads

  2. Vacuum Weekly
  3. Clean Spills Immediately
  4. Re-Finish Every 3-5 Years

WOOD FLOOR CLEANING TECHNIQUES

Cleaning techniques vary depending on the installation & finish of the floor. These types of floors with a urethane finish must not be waxed ever. They require cleaners that won’t leave a film or residue. Manufacturers of “Pre-finished” hardwood floors recommend their specific products designed for their floor’s routine maintenance. Never utilize products meant for other flooring varieties such as vinyl or tile cleaning products.

Do not use ammonia cleaners or oil soaps on a wood floor, as they will dull your floor’s finish & performance. Since wood naturally expands when it is wet, never steam clean, damp mop, or use excessive water to clean your floor. Large amounts of water can cause the wood to swell & cause your foundation to crack or splinter. Minimize water exposure to hardwood floors & clean up spills as soon as they happen.

Thoroughly inspect the flooring once the installation has been completed and bring any concerns to their attention immediately.

Doors

Hinged doors may require trimming for proper clearance once your new flooring is installed.

Touch-ups

Your installation may require touch-up to walls, moldings and baseboards.

Leftovers

Every installation has material waste. These leftover pieces are most common in irregular shaped rooms or when stairs and halls are recovered.

Waste

The installation crew will remove all waste pertaining to the installation of your new flooring.

Cleaning

It is the customer's responsibility to clean the flooring after installation.

Ventilation

Allow proper ventilation for 72 hours after your flooring installation by utilizing fans.

Cautious

While your new carpet is of the highest quality, it is still subject to everyday wear. So be cautious.

While your new carpet is of the highest quality, it is still subject to everyday wear. Everyday Wear & Tear

Sprouting
If loose ends or "sprouts" extend above the rest of the pile, trim them off evenly with the pile surface. Never try to pull them out. After clipping, smooth the area with your fingers. Sharp edges on your vacuum cleaner, a child's toy, high heels or animal claws can cause this condition.
Pile Crushing
All carpet fibers will crush under heavy, stationary loads. Crushing can be reduced by shifting furniture regularly. Crushed areas can usually be restored by covering the area with a damp, clean white cloth and then very carefully applying heat to the cloth with an electric iron on a low setting. Remove the cloth and restore the pile while it is still hot by brushing it lightly. Keep traffic off the carpet until it is dry.
Shading
After certain carpet styles have been subjected to traffic, you may notice areas that appear lighter or darker than other areas. Don't be alarmed! Shading is the result of the change in direction of the pile due to pressure from the footsteps and vacuuming. Brushing the pile all in one direction may temporarily correct shading; however, shading is part of the carpet styling and should be expected to varying degrees. Do not mistake shading for color fading.
Pile Distortion/Roll Crush
When carpet is manufactured, inspected, handled and shipped, it is rolled and unrolled many times. A common problem called pile distortion or roll crush can occur when this happens. It can be corrected only after the carpet is installed.
